Coupons & Discounts

Coupons let you offer discounts to your customers. A coupon is a code a customer enters at checkout, and it can knock money off in three different ways: a percentage, a fixed amount, or free shipping.

This guide covers everything: the types of discount, how to build a coupon step by step, the limits you can put on it, and how coupons behave on your store.

The Three Discount Types

Every coupon uses one of these.

  • Percentage - A percentage off the eligible items, like 10% or 20%. You can also set a highest discount cap, so “20% off” never takes more than a certain amount off one order.
  • Fixed amount - A set amount off, like ₦2,000. The discount is subtracted from the order.
  • Free shipping - Delivery becomes free for the customer. The item prices stay the same.

Which one to use? Percentage is the most flexible for store-wide sales. Fixed amount works well as a welcome offer (“₦2,000 off your first order”). Free shipping is a great incentive when delivery fees are what’s stopping people from buying.

How to Create a Coupon

Go to Coupons in your dashboard and click New Coupon. The form is split into sections: the discount, the code, who can use it, when it works, and which items it works on.

Quick start templates

Before you build from scratch, check the Quick start section. It has three ready-made coupons you can apply with one click, then tweak:

  • 10% for new customers - First-time buyers only, once per person.
  • 20% off sale - A quick 20% off the whole store.
  • ₦2,000 off first order - Fixed amount, first-time buyers only, once per person.

Apply one and it fills in the form for you. Change anything you like, then save.

Step 1: The discount

Pick the discount type, then set the value:

  • Percentage - Enter the percentage (0.01% to 100%). Optionally set a Highest discount (₦) cap, the most this coupon can ever take off one order. Leave it empty for no cap.
  • Fixed amount - Enter the amount in naira, like 5,000.
  • Free shipping - Nothing to enter. Delivery is free for the customer.

Step 2: The code

Enter a discount code like WELCOME10. Codes are not case sensitive and are always stored in capitals, so welcome10 works the same as WELCOME10.

No idea what to call it? Click Generate code and Mafflle creates one for you.

Codes need to be at least 3 characters and no more than 30.

Step 3: Who can use it

Set the limits on who gets the discount:

  • How many times it can be used - Total uses across everyone. Leave empty for no limit.
  • Times each person can use it - How many times one customer can use it. Leave empty for no limit.
  • Smallest order it works on - A minimum order value. The coupon won’t work below this.
  • Only new customers - Tick this to restrict the coupon to first-time buyers. A customer who has placed a paid order before can’t use it.

Step 4: When it works

Set a start and end date and time if you want it active for a window, like a flash sale. Leave both empty to turn it on now with no end date.

Step 5: Which items it works on

Choose what the discount applies to:

  • Everything - The whole store.
  • Categories - Pick one or more categories. Only items in those categories get the discount.
  • Products - Search and pick specific products. Only those products get the discount.

You need at least one product or category if you pick those options.

After You Create It

The coupon is live immediately (or on its start date, if you set one). Customers enter the code at checkout and the discount shows on their order.

Coupons are listed on the Coupons page with a status badge and a Times used count. Statuses are:

  • Active - Working now.
  • Scheduled - Set to start in the future.
  • Paused - You turned it off.
  • Exhausted - Hit its total use limit.
  • Expired - Past its end date.

Managing Coupons

From the Coupons list you can:

  • Pause or resume a coupon. Pausing turns it off instantly without deleting it. Customers see it as invalid while paused.
  • Delete a coupon. This removes it for new uses. People who already used it keep their discount.

To change a coupon’s details, open it and edit. The settings work the same as when you created it.

How Coupons Behave on Orders

  • The discount shows on the order and the customer’s confirmation.
  • A percentage coupon only discounts the items it applies to (everything, the selected categories, or the selected products), so the discount reflects what’s actually eligible.
  • Free shipping coupons zero out the delivery fee but don’t touch item prices.
  • Usage is tracked per coupon, so you always know how many times it’s been used.

If an order is cancelled

When an order that used a coupon is cancelled, the coupon usage is released. It stops counting against the total use limit and the per-customer limit, so the code can be used again.

Coupon Tips

  • Make the code memorable. WELCOME10, FLASH20, LOYALTY are easier to share on WhatsApp than random strings.
  • Cap big percentage discounts. A “50% off” coupon with no cap can wipe out a huge order. The highest discount cap protects you.
  • Use the minimum order value to stop the coupon being used on tiny orders.
  • “Only new customers” builds in welcome offers without you checking manually. Mafflle handles it.
