Adding Products
Products are what you sell. Mafflle lets you add a simple product with one price and one stock count, or a product with variants so you can sell the same item in different sizes, colors, or versions.
The difference matters more than it sounds. Choosing the right one up front keeps your store organized, your stock accurate, and your customers unconfused. This guide explains both, when to use which, and how to set them up.
Simple Product or Variants?
Here’s the rule of thumb.
Use a simple product when everyone buys the same thing at the same price. A bag of rice. A phone case. A handbag in one color. One price, one stock count, done.
Use variants when the same product comes in different versions that customers need to choose between. A T-shirt in sizes S to XL. A pair of shoes in black and white. A perfume in 50ml and 100ml.
The key question to ask yourself: do customers choose between versions of this exact product? If yes, use variants. If everyone wants the same one, keep it simple.
Why variants are worth it
Variants are not just for looks. They do three things for you:
- One listing, many options. Instead of adding “T-shirt black”, “T-shirt white”, “T-shirt navy” as three separate products, you add one T-shirt and let customers pick the color. Your product list stays short and tidy.
- Correct stock for each version. You can set stock per size or color. If XL is sold out but M remains, customers only see XL as unavailable. With separate products you’d have to delete or hide each one manually.
- The right price shows automatically. If the 100ml bottle costs more than the 50ml, each variant carries its own price. Customers pick a size and the correct price appears.
The storefront shows option buttons for size and color. When a customer picks one, the matching price and stock show up.
When simple is the better choice
Don’t overcomplicate things. If there’s only one version to sell, a single product is faster to set up and easier to manage. There’s no rule that says every product needs options. If you catch yourself setting up one option with a single value, step back, you probably just want a simple product.
Add a Simple Product
A simple product is one item with a single price, like a T-shirt or a bag of rice.
- Go to Products in your dashboard and click New Product.
- Fill in the product details:
- Product title - The name customers see. Make it descriptive, like “Heavyweight Cotton T-Shirt” instead of just “Shirt”.
- Description - What makes the product special. Material, fit, what it’s good for.
- Category - Optional. Groups the product with similar items on your storefront. See Categories to organize your catalog.
- Add your product photos (see Product Images below).
- Set your inventory:
- Stock quantity - How many you have in hand
- Selling price - What customers pay
- Compare-at price - Optional. The original price, shown crossed out next to your selling price when it’s higher. Use it for a “was ₦18,000, now ₦15,000” feel.
- Cost to buy/make this product - Optional. What it costs you. Customers never see this; it’s for your profit tracking.
- Click Save.
The product goes live on your storefront right away. You can also click Save & Add Another to keep entering more products without leaving the page.
Add a Product with Variants
Variants let you sell one product in multiple versions, like a T-shirt in sizes Small, Medium, Large, and XL. Each combination gets its own price and stock. The setup happens in two parts: first you tell Mafflle which options exist (like Size and Color), then you fill in the price and stock for every combination.
This part trips people up more than anything else, so we’re going to walk through it slowly. Once it clicks, it stays clicked.
Step 1: Turn on options
- Go to Products → New Product.
- Fill in the title, description, and category as usual.
- Scroll to the inventory section. You’ll see a card titled This product has options with a switch on the right.
- Flip the switch on.
Right away, the page changes. Instead of the single price and stock fields, you’ll now see a Product Options area. That’s where you build the choices customers will pick from.
Step 2: Give your first option a name
You’ll see a row with two boxes: Option Name and Option Values.
Start with the Option Name box and type what the choice is called, like:
SizeColorMaterial
Type it and click anywhere else on the page (or press Tab). The name needs to be saved before the values will take effect, so don’t skip this.
Tip: if you name the option exactly Size, a shortcut appears underneath to Add standard sizes (S, M, L, XL). If you name it exactly Color, you get Add common colors (Black, White, Gray, Navy). One click and they’re all added. The shortcut only appears when the name matches, so spell them exactly.
Step 3: Add the values
Now use the Option Values box. This is the part that catches most people out, so read carefully.
Type ONE value at a time and press Enter on your keyboard to lock it in. Each value you add becomes a small tag (a pill-shaped chip) sitting above the box.
For example, for Size you’d type:
- Type
Small, press Enter. A “Small” chip appears. - Type
Medium, press Enter. A “Medium” chip appears. - Type
Large, press Enter. A “Large” chip appears.
To remove a value you already added, click the small x on its chip.
Two things to know:
- Pressing Enter is what adds the value. If you just type and move on, nothing gets saved.
- A comma also works instead of Enter, if that’s more natural to you.
Step 4: Add a second option (optional)
If you only need one choice, like just sizes, skip this. If the product also comes in colors, add a second option:
- Click Add another option.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3: name it
Color, then add the valuesBlack,Whiteone at a time with Enter.
You can add up to 3 options per product.
Step 5: Fill in the variants
Here’s the magic part: Mafflle automatically builds every combination of your options and shows them in a table. Size (3 values) × Color (2 values) gives you 6 rows, one for each pair:
- Small / Black, Small / White
- Medium / Black, Medium / White
- Large / Black, Large / White
Each row in the table has four fields:
- Price - what customers pay for that exact combination
- Compare-at Price - optional original price
- Cost - what it costs you, hidden from customers
- Quantity - how many you have of that exact combination
This is where honesty pays off. If you have 3 black larges and 5 white larges, put 3 and 5 in the right rows. Customers will see exactly what’s left of each.
Step 6: Use Quick Apply when prices are the same
If every size costs the same (most products), you don’t want to type the price six times. Mafflle opens a Quick Apply panel to help with exactly this.
- In the Quick Apply panel, enter the price once in the Price field.
- Add the quantity if every variant has the same stock.
- Click Apply to All Variants.
Every row gets that value. Then you go down the table and only adjust the ones that differ. There’s also a box you can tick, Only fill empty rows (skip existing values), if you want to fill in just the blanks without overwriting what’s already there.
If Quick Apply isn’t open, look for the Quick Apply button above the variant table.
Step 7: Save
Click Save and you’re done. Your storefront will show Size and Color buttons automatically. When a customer picks “Large” and “Black”, the right price and stock appear.
If something looks wrong
- No variant rows appear: you probably haven’t added any values yet. Make sure you pressed Enter after typing each one, and that the option name is filled in.
- A row is missing: the table only builds rows for values that have chips. If a value never got its Enter press, it won’t exist.
- Can’t save, error on a variant row: every variant needs a price and a stock quantity. A red outline shows you exactly which row is missing something. Hover over a red field for the reason.
- Values aren’t sticking when I edit later: when you change option values on an existing product, Mafflle remembers the prices and stock you already set for matching combinations. So if you retype a value you had before, its numbers come back.
When not to bother with variants
If there’s only one version to sell, skip all of this and use a simple product. There’s no rule that every product needs options. If you’d need one option with a single value, that’s really just a simple product wearing a costume.
Product Images
- At least one image is required before you can save a product.
- The first image is your featured image, shown in product listings.
- You can have up to 3 images per product on Starter, or 10 on Growth.
- Drag and drop photos, or click to browse your device. JPG and PNG work best.
- Click an image to make it the featured one; a badge shows which one is featured.
Clear photos matter. Customers on WhatsApp and Instagram decide fast, so show the product from a couple of angles.
Make a Product Available or Not
Every product has an Available / Unavailable switch on its product page.
- Available - Customers can see and buy it.
- Unavailable - Hidden from your storefront, but the product and its details are kept.
Turn a product off when you’re out of stock but expect more, or when you’re pausing a listing. Customers won’t see it until you switch it back on.
Delete and Restore Products
If you no longer sell something, you can delete it.
- Open the product and click Delete.
- Confirm. The product moves to Deleted Products.
Deleted products are kept for a while, so you can restore one later if you change your mind. The Deleted Products tab in Products shows everything you’ve removed, with a Restore button on each.
Categories
Categories group similar products so customers can filter your storefront easily.
- Create, rename, reorder, and delete categories in Products → Categories.
- Assign a product to a category when you add or edit it.
A product doesn’t need a category, but stores with a lot of products are much easier to browse with them. See the Categories guide for the full breakdown.
Product Limits
Your plan sets how many products and images you can have:
| Plan | Max Products | Max Images per Product |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | 20 | 3 |
| Growth | 200 | 10 |
When you hit your limit, you’ll see a warning and a prompt to upgrade in Settings → Billing.
Inventory Basics
Stock is deducted automatically when a customer orders, and restored if the order is cancelled.
- A product with 0 stock shows Sold Out on your storefront, so customers can’t buy it.
- Keep your stock numbers accurate. Customers will tell you fast if you oversell something you don’t have.
