Setting Up Meta Pixel
If you run ads on Instagram or Facebook, you want to know which ad actually brought the sale. That is what the Meta Pixel does. It is a small tracker from Meta that watches what visitors do on your storefront and reports it back to your ad account.
Once connected, your store reports the full shopping journey to Meta automatically:
- PageView: fires on every storefront page a shopper opens.
- ViewContent: fires when a shopper opens a product page, with that product and its price.
- AddToCart: fires when a shopper adds an item to cart, with the product, quantity, and value.
- InitiateCheckout: fires when a shopper starts checkout, with the cart contents and subtotal.
- Purchase: fires when an order succeeds, with the items and the order total in Naira. This covers paid orders, pay on delivery orders, and orders waiting for payment confirmation.
With the full funnel, you can see which ads turn into sales, find exactly where shoppers drop off, and show follow-up ads to people who viewed or carted but did not buy. Refreshing a page does not inflate your numbers: each completed step is recorded once.
Get your Pixel ID from Meta
Your Pixel ID is a long number Meta assigns to your pixel. To find it:
- Open Meta Events Manager and select your ad account.
- Go to Data Sources and open your pixel (also called a dataset). If you have none yet, create one for your store website.
- Copy the numeric Pixel ID. It looks like
1296813672565300.
Meta moves these screens around, so the names may differ slightly. What you need is always the same: the numeric ID, digits only.
Connect it in your dashboard
- Open your dashboard and go to Settings → General.
- Scroll to the Analytics Integration card.
- Paste your ID into Meta Pixel ID. Digits only, no spaces or letters.
- Save your changes.
That is the whole setup. From now on, every visit and every successful order on your storefront is reported to that pixel.
Confirm events are flowing
Open your storefront in a normal browser window and click through a few pages. Then check Events Manager with Test Events or the Meta Pixel Helper: new PageView events show up within a few minutes.
To confirm purchases, place a test order or wait for your next real sale, then look for the Purchase event with its Naira value. If you test with your own browser, turn off your ad blocker first. Blockers stop the pixel from loading, so you will see nothing even though setup is correct.
Troubleshooting
- “Meta Pixel ID must contain only numbers”: you pasted something extra. The field takes digits only, so remove spaces, dashes, or letters and save again.
- No events in Events Manager: double-check the saved ID matches your pixel exactly, confirm you saved, and test without an ad blocker. Events also take a few minutes to appear.
- Purchase value looks wrong: the value sent is your order total in Naira with currency NGN. If it does not match, check the order total in Managing Orders.
