Categories

Categories group similar products so customers can find what they want without scrolling through everything. If you sell dresses, bags, and shoes, you can make a category for each. On your storefront, customers see those as filter buttons and can tap one to see only that group.

Categories are optional. A store with a handful of products might not need them. But once you have a few dozen, they make a real difference.

Why Categories Help

  • Customers find things faster. Instead of scrolling your whole catalog, they tap a category like “Shoes” and see only shoes.
  • Your storefront looks organized. A small row of category buttons at the top beats a long, jumbled product list.
  • Easy to manage later. When you add new products, you just assign them to the right category.

Create a Category

  1. Go to Products → Categories in your dashboard.
  2. Click Create Category.
  3. Enter a name. Keep it short and clear: “Shoes”, “Dresses”, “Bags”, “Accessories”.
  4. Click Create.

The new category appears in the list, and it shows up as a filter on your storefront right away.

Assign Products to a Category

You can set a product’s category when you add or edit it:

  1. Open the product in your dashboard.
  2. In the Category field, pick the category from the dropdown.
  3. Save.

A product belongs to one category at a time. If you don’t pick one, it’s uncategorized and shows up under All Products without a category filter.

Rename a Category

  1. Go to Products → Categories.
  2. Find the category and click the Edit (pencil) button.
  3. Enter the new name and save.

Renaming updates the name everywhere, including your storefront and every product assigned to it. No need to re-assign products.

Reorder Categories

The order of your categories is the order they appear on your storefront, so put the most popular ones first.

  1. Go to Products → Categories.
  2. Use the up and down arrows next to a category to move it.
  3. The new order saves immediately.

Delete a Category

  1. Go to Products → Categories.
  2. Find the category and click the Delete (trash) button.
  3. Confirm.

Deleting a category does not delete the products in it. The products are kept, they just become uncategorized. You can assign them to another category later.

Tips

  • Keep category names short. “Shoes” beats “Footwear and Accessories”.
  • Don’t create too many. If every category has one product, you’re over-splitting.
  • Reorder so the things customers buy most are first. Put your bestsellers’ category at the top.
